Why this matters
The Deutscher Sauna-Bund is the only national sauna association run by a working medical research community. That orientation is the reason German sauna culture has the strictest hygiene and operator standards in the world, and the reason an association founded in 1949 sits today on a scientific-literature archive that the rest of the industry treats as the reference corpus.
For a sauna buyer or a traveller, the practical consequence is the SaunaPremium quality seal. Roughly 150 facilities across Germany and Austria carry one of the Sauna-Bund's three seals (Premium, Selection, Classic), audited on a three-year cycle, with Premium inspection done by unannounced covert visit. A Premium-certified bathhouse in Germany is a documented assurance of trained staff, water-testing cadence, infusion technique, and facility hygiene that no other national sauna body offers at comparable scope.
For the wider industry, the Sauna-Bund is the institutional home of Aufguss. The annual Deutsche Aufguss-Meisterschaft is organised by its commercial subsidiary Sauna-Matti GmbH. The technical R 26.30.04 Aufguss-Richtlinie, governing how infusions are conducted in public facilities, is co-published with the DGfdB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für das Badewesen) and went through a public Einspruchsverfahren (objection procedure) in 2025. Germany hosted the 2023 Aufguss-WM at the SATAMA Sauna Resort & Spa, with 79 performances by 112 masters from 16 nations.
And it is the only national sauna body whose past president was a working clinician at a national research hospital (the Charité Berlin) and whose research archive, saunaliteratur.de, was personally founded by that president in December 2009.
History
The Deutscher Sauna-Bund was established in 1949 in Bielefeld, the world's oldest national sauna association by founding year. Its original goal was to popularise the Finnish form of sauna bathing in Germany and to document its health benefits. The association celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025.
The exact founding date is not consistently recorded in public sources. One trade-press anniversary article cites 8 February 1949; the Sauna-Bund's own site does not publish a founding day, and the marketing-facing Tag der Sauna on 24 September was created in 2015 rather than tied to the founding moment. The founders themselves are not named on the Sauna-Bund's site or in the German Wikipedia entry: that level of detail likely exists only in print archives or anniversary publications.
The Sauna-Bund describes itself today as “the world's largest association of the sauna industry” (translated from der weltweit größte Verband der Sauna-Industrie) and remains headquartered in Bielefeld at Meisenstrasse 83. The membership base spans public sauna facilities, hotels and guesthouses with sauna amenities, sauna manufacturers, and individual enthusiasts.
Werner Fritzsche, then Conradi
The Sauna-Bund's presidency runs in long tenures. Dr. Werner Fritzsche led the association for more than 30 years, from roughly the 1960s into 1991. He died on 28 September 1996. Fritzsche personally selected his successor: Prof. em. Dr. med. Eberhard Conradi (5 February 1932 to 14 February 2015), at the time the director of the Clinic for Physical Medicine at the Charité, the Berlin university hospital, and the first president of the unified Deutsche Gesellschaft für Physikalische Medizin und Rehabilitation after Germany's reunification.
Conradi is the figure who set the Sauna-Bund's medical-research orientation. He qualified as a physiotherapy specialist in 1963, joined the Charité physiotherapy outpatient clinic as Oberarzt (senior physician) in 1968, and was named director in 1981. His 1980 habilitation at Humboldt-Universität Berlin was titled, in English translation, “Contribution to the Adaptation Process of the Human Organism to Repeated Thermal Stress.” From 1989 to 1991 he served as president of the Society for Physiotherapy of the GDR and led the East-West merger of physiotherapy bodies after reunification. He took the Sauna-Bund presidency in 1991 with Fritzsche's endorsement, and continued in scientific work alongside it.
In 1999, on the Sauna-Bund's 50th anniversary, Conradi convened the XII International Sauna Congress in Bad Aachen as documented in the Sauna-Bund's historical narrative of the 1990s. 550 visitors came from 15 countries; 28 speakers presented; 60 exhibitors set up; the theme was “Sauna: Wellness weltweit.” It was during that congress, on 8 May 1999, that a four-nation working group finalised the 1999 Aachen Sauna Definition. Conradi's Geschäftsführer Rolf-Andreas Pieper sat in the four-person drafting committee representing Germany.
In December 2009, Conradi founded saunaliteratur.de, the scientific-literature database for sauna research, in cooperation with the Sauna-Bund and the International Sauna Association. The database aggregates peer-reviewed citations on cardiovascular effects, immune function, thermal adaptation, and clinical applications. It remains hosted by the Sauna-Bund through the Bielefeld office today.
Conradi died on 14 February 2015 at age 83. The Sauna-Bund named him Honorary President (Ehrenpräsident) in his lifetime, and the medical journal Physikalische Medizin, Rehabilitationsmedizin, Kurortmedizin published an in memoriam tribute. The Sauna-Bund's own obituary, “Zum Tode von Prof. Conradi,” remains hosted on the legacy saunabund-ev.de domain.
It is worth being careful about one detail. Primary ISA sources list four signatories of the Aachen Definition working group: Ernst Braunschweiler (Switzerland), Peter Jeitler (Austria), Rolf-Andreas Pieper (Germany), and Pirkko Valtakari (the Finnish Sauna Society). Conradi does not appear as a personal signatory. His role at the 1999 congress was institutional: as host-association president and congress convener, he made the event possible; his Geschäftsführer Pieper sat at the technical drafting table.
Mission
The Sauna-Bund's current mission statement, in translation from the German on its homepage, is: “to disseminate the idea of sauna bathing in Germany and to advise and support all members of the association with its service offerings.” EOS-Sauna, a German heater manufacturer, summarises the founding purpose slightly differently in its company profile: “to spread the concept of sauna bathing in Germany, to promote scientific research and technical progress.”
Both framings sit underneath three operational tracks. Public-facility hygiene and operator standards are expressed through the SaunaPremium quality-seal scheme. Aufguss formalisation is expressed through the R 26.30.04 Aufguss-Richtlinie and the Deutsche Aufguss-Meisterschaft. Scientific archive and research work runs through saunaliteratur.de and ongoing collaboration with peer-reviewed sauna research in journals such as Karger's Research in Complementary Medicine and Thieme's Zeitschrift für Komplementärmedizin.
The 1999 Aachen Definition of Sauna is the Sauna-Bund's reference text for what counts as a sauna by international standard. The Sauna-Bund hosted the congress at which it was formalised, and its current site cross-references the ISA archive for the verbatim text.
Membership
Membership composition spans sauna-operating businesses (public baths, thermal baths, hotels and wellness hotels with sauna amenities), manufacturers and suppliers (sauna heater makers, cabin builders, oil and Aufguss suppliers), architects, planners and consultants specialised in bath facilities, and individual enthusiasts. The Sauna-Bund describes itself as the world's largest sauna industry association but does not publish a current member total on its public pages.
The SaunaPremium quality-seal scheme
Launched in 2008, the certification programme is structured around three quality seals. The Sauna-Bund explicitly frames the seals as different in scope, not in quality.
| Seal | Audience | Fee per 3-year cycle | Inspection |
|---|---|---|---|
| SaunaPremium | Full-service sauna landscapes with bathing pool, multiple cooling options, restaurant, wellness programme, trained staff | €2,450 | Unannounced covert on-site inspection by quality-committee members |
| SaunaSelection | Mid-size facilities with focused sauna offering | €750 | Written application, self-disclosure, spot-check verification |
| SaunaClassic | Smaller facilities meeting baseline standards | €200 | Written application, self-disclosure, spot-check verification |
Approximately 150 facilities are currently certified across Germany and Austria. Certification runs three years from the first day of the month after approval; recertification requires a full re-inspection. Visible adopters include Driburg Therme, TuWass Tuttlingen, Aqua Fit Zeven, and H2O Bad in Herford.
Common requirements across all three tiers: ordinary Sauna-Bund membership, rigorous hygiene (regular pool-water testing, regular cleaning and disinfection of sauna and sanitary areas), and trained professional staff. Premium adds requirements for health-oriented Aufgüsse delivered with proper technique, a restaurant with a varied menu, and diverse cooling options.
Events and publications
Aufguss culture
Germany is the modern home of Aufguss, the ritualised performance art of pouring scented water on hot sauna stones, accompanied by towel-waving (Wedeln), music, lighting, and choreography, performed by a Sauna-Meister. The Sauna-Bund has played a central role in formalising, standardising, and competitively elevating the discipline.
The Deutsche Aufguss-Meisterschaft is the annual national competition, organised by Sauna-Matti GmbH. Categories typically cover Classic and Show Aufguss. Winners qualify for the international circuit. The Aufguss-WM is the international championship; in 2023 the event was hosted in Germany at the SATAMA Sauna Resort & Spa, with 79 performances by 112 masters from 16 nations.
The Aufguss-Richtlinie (DGfdB R 26.30.04) is the technical guideline for safe conduct of Aufgüsse in public facilities, co-published by the Sauna-Bund and the DGfdB. It covers infusion techniques, essential-oil handling, ice-sphere use, and operator training. A revised draft (Blaudruck) opened to public Einspruch in 2025 ahead of formal adoption, broadening the definition of permitted infusion types and adding rules for ice-sphere handling. A 2018 Sauna-Bund survey found that 51% of facilities were aware of the infusion guidelines and 72% had received training on infusion procedures.
Tag der Sauna
Annual industry-awareness day on 24 September. Created in 2015 as a marketing-and-PR action; each year carries a motto. For 2026 the motto is “SAUNA. Preserving Roots, Creating the New.” Member businesses can participate free of charge. (Some secondary sources date the launch to the Sauna-Bund's 65th anniversary in 2014; the official Tag der Sauna site dates the creation to 2015, and the two-year wobble is not material.)
The Deutsche Sauna-Akademie
The Sauna-Bund's professional-development arm runs tiered training. Sauna-Fachkraft (sauna specialist) covers fundamental knowledge for safe sauna operation, including infusion technique. Sauna-Meister (sauna master) is the highest qualification level for staff in sauna facilities, offered in modular in-person and webinar formats. A full-time Sauna-Meister training is also available via the IST-Studieninstitut.
International Sauna Congresses hosted
The Sauna-Bund has hosted at least two ISA congresses: the XII International Sauna Congress in Bad Aachen in 1999, convened by Conradi for the Sauna-Bund's 50th anniversary and the venue at which the Aachen Definition was formalised; and the XVIII International Sauna Congress in Stuttgart, 24 to 27 October 2022, co-located with the Interbad trade fair.
Publications
The Sauna-Bund's flagship printed magazine, SAUNA & BÄDERPRAXIS, ran for more than 30 years until 31 December 2020. Its digital successor, SAUNA FOKUS, has been published bi-annually as an e-paper since 2021, each issue centred on a focal topic with a lead article, an interview, and a business profile. A non-member subscription runs €10.00 per year, VAT included.
Leadership
Prof. Dr. Carsten Sonnenberg is the current President of the Deutscher Sauna-Bund. He is a law professor at Hochschule Anhalt and serves as syndicate counsel for Stadtbad Braunschweig.
The full Präsidium reflects the breadth of stakeholders the association represents.

Honorary President (Ehrenpräsident) is the late Prof. em. Dr. med. Eberhard Conradi. Intermediate presidents between Conradi (from 1991) and Sonnenberg are not surfaced in the available public sources; the Sauna-Bund's “Ungeahnte Herausforderungen” historical narrative covers the 1990s through Conradi but does not enumerate the subsequent succession in detail.
Executive management transition
Martin Niederstein has held the Geschäftsführer (CEO) role since 1 January 2021, when he succeeded Rolf-Andreas Pieper after Pieper's 38-year tenure. A state-certified IT specialist in business, Niederstein worked for the Sauna-Bund as a student assistant from 1997, spent 16 years as an IT manager in business consulting, and returned as a consultant in late 2017 before becoming deputy Geschäftsführer in 2019. He also leads the UVSV certification office day-to-day and the Akademie for Training and Further Education in Bathing Facilities.
In December 2025 the Sauna-Bund announced that Gerhild Neumann would succeed Niederstein from January 2026, in both the Sauna-Bund Geschäftsführer role and at Sauna-Matti GmbH. As of writing, Neumann's tenure is in its earliest months.
Pieper has not left the organisation. After retiring from the Geschäftsführer role, he was elected to the Präsidium as Schriftführer (Secretary) and now heads the UVSV certification office, the body that issues and audits the three quality seals.
Relationships
International Sauna Association
The Sauna-Bund is the German national association on the ISA, one of the four founding national bodies along with the Austrian Sauna Forum, the Finnish Sauna Society, and the Japan Sauna-Spa Association. The ISA was founded in 1958 with its initial office in Germany, went dormant, and was re-established in 1977 in Helsinki, where it has been based ever since. For the 2022 to 2026 ISA board term, the Sauna-Bund holds two member seats: President Sonnenberg and Schriftführer Pieper.
Sauna-Matti GmbH
A wholly affiliated subsidiary of the Sauna-Bund and its commercial arm. Sauna-Matti operates the consumer-facing saunaindeutschland.de directory of certified facilities, organises the Deutsche Aufguss-Meisterschaft, and sells branded products, books, and Aufguss supplies.
UVSV (Unabhängige Vereinigung Saunabad-Verbund)
The Sauna-Bund's independent certification office, headed by Rolf-A. Pieper. Issues and audits the three quality seals.
DGfdB and Interbad
The DGfdB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für das Badewesen) is the sister industry body for the German bath sector. It co-publishes the Aufguss-Richtlinie with the Sauna-Bund and runs the annual DGfdB Congress, co-located with Interbad. The 70th edition in 2024 included an International Session in English. Interbad itself is the world's largest trade fair for swimming pools, saunas, and spas, held biennially in Stuttgart; the Sauna-Bund is an industry partner running special programming such as the “Sauna Impulse” sessions. The next edition runs 6 to 8 October 2026.
Manufacturer network
Major German sauna heater and cabin manufacturers, including EOS, Klafs, and Spitzner, reference the Sauna-Bund's quality seals in their consumer materials and certify products or facilities under the Sauna-Bund umbrella.
What it means for you
If you are travelling in Germany or Austria and want a sauna that meets the highest national standard, the directory at saunaindeutschland.de lists every facility certified under the Sauna-Bund's three seals. A SaunaPremium bathhouse is the documented top of the range: full-service sauna landscape with bathing pool, multiple cooling options, restaurant, wellness programme, trained staff, and Premium-grade Aufguss technique. Roughly 150 facilities across the two countries currently hold one of the seals.
If you are evaluating sauna equipment and want a German engineering and standards reference, the Sauna-Bund is the institutional source. Its quality-seal scheme, its co-published Aufguss-Richtlinie, and the saunaliteratur.de research archive are the most rigorous national-level standards work the sauna industry has produced anywhere.
If you are interested in Aufguss as a discipline, the path runs through the Deutsche Sauna-Akademie's Sauna-Fachkraft and Sauna-Meister certificates, the Deutsche Aufguss-Meisterschaft as the competitive ladder, and the R 26.30.04 guideline as the technical baseline.
If you are reading this from North America and want a continent-local industry reference instead, the North American Sauna Society holds the ISA national-member seat for the United States. Heated Retreat is a dealer member there.
And if you want to understand the Sauna-Bund's frame for what counts as a sauna, the 1999 Aachen Definition is the cleanest one-paragraph answer. The Sauna-Bund hosted the congress at which it was formalised, and its president at the time, Eberhard Conradi, made the event possible.
